San Diego Drops Close Contest Against the Redhawks

Dresha Moore collected a new career-high 12 rebounds against Seattle U on Thursday

SEATTLE, Wash. – Back in action on Thursday night in the Pacific Northwest, the San Diego women's basketball team (6-12, 0-5 WCC) battled throughout a back-and-forth game before ultimately coming up short against Seattle U (5-11, 1-4 WCC) by a 68-62 final score at the Redhawk Center.

Kylie Ray had another big scoring night as she recorded 23 points and five assists against the Redhawks on Thursday. Providing nice production off the bench, Dresha Moore grabbed a new career-best 12 rebounds and scored nine points for USD against the newest member of the WCC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Redhawks began the game with a 7-0 run, USD started to battle back as Ray knocked down a three point shot to make it a four point game.
  • Following a media timeout, the Torero offense started to flow better as Ray found Olivia Owens open for a free throw line jumper to make it a 10-7 Seattle U advantage.
  • Later on in the quarter, Malia Tharpe started to make her presence felt as she scored a layup off of a Redhawk turnover as San Diego trailed 16-15 through the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Getting the second quarter going, Tharpe continued her strong start to the game by scoring a layup after grabbing an offense rebound to give the Toreros a 17-16 advantage and their first lead of the game.
  • Following another run from Seattle U, the Toreros worked hard to keep the game close as Hallie Rhodes scored a driving layup to make it a four point game.
  • Wrapping up the first half, Jayden Rhodes got into the paint after a great feed from Ray and scored a layup as the Toreros trailed 28-25 heading into halftime.
  • Getting the second half going, H. Rhodes once again got downhill and finished a driving layup to make it a three point game early in the quarter.
  • Moore and Owens would then start to get going as they scored six straight points for the Toreros to even the game at 33-all and forced the Redhawks into a timeout.
  • Following the break, Ray and Tharpe would each score buckets to put San Diego ahead 39-35 for their largest lead of the game at that point.
  • Moore continued her strong third quarter by scoring a layup off a well-designed pick-and-roll between her and Ray as USD led 44-42 heading into the final quarter.
  • After an 8-0 spurt from the Redhawks to start the fourth quarter, Ray helped San Diego respond as she scored a layup with a nice floating shot over the outstretched arms of the defense.
  • Owens would then take advantage of a steal from Moore as she took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup to make it a 52-48 game.
  • Seattle U would go on to take control of the game late in the quarter as they picked up the 68-62 victory on their home floor.
