MALIBU, Calif. — San Diego men's tennis' Adrien Berrut is one win from the NCAA Singles Championships. The Torero junior upset top-seeded Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA 6-2, 6-1 in Saturday's round of 16 at the ITA Division I Men's Southwest Regional Championship, then rallied past the Bruins' Cassius Chinlund 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in Sunday's quarterfinals at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

Berrut, one of the 9-16 seeds, faces Pepperdine's Lasse Poertner in Monday's semifinals. Poertner, a 5-8 seed ranked No. 69 nationally, beat USC's third-seeded Nathan Trouve 7-5, 6-0 in his quarterfinal. The regional's two finalists earn automatic berths to the NCAA Singles Championships, set for Nov. 11-17 in Athens, Ga.

The Toreros have a second path to Athens in doubles. Third-seeded Manvydas Balciunas and Vincent Marysko meet Poertner and Aleksa Pisaric, Pepperdine's top-seeded pair, in a 2 p.m. Monday semifinal, and the doubles champion earns the automatic berth to the NCAA Doubles Championships.

Berrut opened the tournament Friday by outlasting Arizona's Cole Stelse 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), then handled Arizona State's Simon Caldwell 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. Saturday brought van Loben Sels, who won last year's regional doubles title alongside Spencer Johnson, and Berrut conceded three games in two sets. Chinlund took the opening set Sunday before Berrut won the second-set tiebreak 7-3 and closed out the third 7-5.

Marysko gave the Toreros a second player in the round of 16. The sophomore, also a 9-16 seed, played four sets Friday and every one of them went to a tiebreak — he won all four, beating UC Irvine's Alexander Guajardo 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) in the round of 64 and Arizona's Tristan Berard 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) in the round of 32. Poertner ended the run 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.

Balciunas, a 5-8 seed in singles and the reigning WCC Freshman of the Year, beat UCLA's Leo von Bismarck 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in his opener before LMU's Cesar Cruz turned him back 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the round of 32.

Two Torero freshmen earned their way into the 64-player main draw through Thursday's qualifying. Botond Nagy, the No. 2 seed in qualifying, beat UC Santa Barbara's Pavel Bushuev 6-2, 6-4 after a first-round bye, then took the opening set from UCLA's fourth-seeded Rudy Quan, last year's regional finalist, in a tiebreak before falling 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-3 on Friday. Nicolas Baena, the No. 4 qualifying seed, got past LMU's Tristan Messerli 6-2, 6-4 and UC Irvine's Holland Snell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, then dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 decision to USC's Connor Church in the round of 64.

Luc Wieland won the first set against Arizona's Alejandro Arcila before falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Lambert Ruland lost 6-4, 6-4 to UC Irvine's Gregory Gamal in the round of 64. Timo Barthes fell to UC Santa Barbara's Carson Lee, the No. 5 qualifying seed, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying.

Three Torero doubles teams reached Sunday's quarterfinals, and Balciunas and Marysko kept going. The No. 3 seeds beat Arizona's 11th-seeded Cole Stelse and Glib Sekachov 8-2 in the round of 16, then handled Arizona State's 15th-seeded Jelani Sarr and Niels Villard 8-4, dropping six games across the two matches.

Nagy and Wieland, seeded 10th, beat UC Irvine's Alexander Guajardo and Dev Mangat 8-4 in the round of 32 and upset Arizona's sixth-seeded Alejandro Arcila and Sasha Rozin 8-4 in the round of 16 before Pisaric and Poertner stopped them 8-5. Berrut and Ruland, the No. 2 seed, beat Arizona's Oskar Jansson and Sander Juuhl Sivertsen 8-4 and Cal Poly's Raz Haviv and Evan Simon 8-5, then fell 8-6 to San Diego State's Jan Kobierski and Piotr Siekanowicz, who moved on to a Monday semifinal. Baena and Barthes lost 8-4 to Cal Poly's Jovan Lubbe and Leo Matthysen in the round of 64.
