MALIBU, Calif. — San Diego men's tennis had three Toreros reach the semifinals at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu, as Adrien Berrut reached the final four in singles and the doubles team of Manvydas Balciunas and Vincent Marysko did the same.

Balciunas and Marysko opened their tournament with an 8-2 win over Arizona in the round of 16 on Sunday, then beat Arizona State 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Their run ended Monday in the semifinals against the top-seeded Pepperdine pair, 6-3, 3-6, [7]-[10] loss in a match tiebreaker. Two other San Diego pairs reached the quarterfinals. Berrut and Lambert Ruland beat Arizona 8-4 in the round of 32 and Cal Poly in the round of 16 before falling 8-6 to SDSU. Botond Nagy and Luc Wieland topped UC Irvine 8-4 and Arizona with a repeat 8-4 score, then lost 8-5 to Pepperdine.

In singles, Berrut put together a four-match run. He opened with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win over Arizona in the round of 64 on Friday, then beat Arizona State 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. On Saturday, he dispatched UCLA 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16. He beat another UCLA foe 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in Sunday's quarterfinals to reach the semifinals, where Pepperdine stopped him 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.

Marysko also made a deep run, winning back-to-back tiebreak matches. He beat UC Irvine 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) in the round of 64 and Arizona 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) in the round of 32 before falling to Pepperdine 4-6, 4-6 in the round of 16.

Freshmen Nicolas Baena and Nagy both came through the singles qualifying draw to reach the main draw. Baena beat LMU 6-2, 6-4 and UC Irvine 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 before falling to USC 5-7, 6-3, 5-7 in the round of 64. Nagy topped UC Santa Barbara 6-2, 6-4 in qualifying, then dropped a three-setter to UCLA, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 3-6. Balciunas beat UCLA 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the round of 64 before falling to LMU 2-6, 7-5, 2-6 in the round of 32. Wieland (2-6, 6-4, 3-6 vs. Arizona's Arcila) and Ruland (4-6, 4-6 vs. UC Irvine's Gregory Gamal) fell in the round of 64.

San Diego Men's tennis will travel to two separate tournaments in the beginning of November, with Toreros traveling to Rome, Georgia to compete in the ITA Conference Masters Championships (Nov. 5-8) and to the ITA Sectional Championships (Nov. 5-8) in Tempe, Arizona.
