SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (5-4, 0-0 WCC) utilized its speed in Friday's final slate of games during the USD/UCSD Co-Host Tournament with a 4-3 bounce back victory over Colorado State (3-4, 0-0 Mountain West) at Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
San Diego got the scoring started first as with the bases loaded and one out, Kaylee Oh used her speed to leg out an infield single off a chopper to short to give USD the lead. San Diego kept the small ball going as freshman Abrielle Diaz hit a chopper once again to the Rams shortstop who botched the ball for an error allowing another Torero to cross the plate and make it 2-0.
In the third inning, the Rams got on the board as a leadoff walk, a bunt and single drove in a run, before USD pitcher Charlie Johnson struck out the final batter of the inning to strand the runner on second.
USD responded in the bottom half of the third, as
Taylor Johnson roped a single up the middle and Oh followed with a single to the third base side of the infield. With runners on with two out, Diaz came clutch with her first collegiate RBI as she singled through the left side of the infield to make it 3-1 USD.
Leading off the fifth for USD from the three hole was Michelle Delgado who provided big bat power the little league way as she hit a towering fly ball down the right field line. Colorado State's right fielder dove for the base hit that trickled into the corner by the time Delgado was past second. With the wave from head coach MJ Knighten at third, she slid into home plate just in time for the inside the park home run to give San Diego an insurance run and make it 4-2.
In the final inning of play, a routine ground ball to short became an oddity as the Rams hitter was called out on the way back to the bag to give USD the first out in the seventh. After two singles, the Rams shortened the lead to 4-3 before Johnson got the final batter to pop out to her in the pitchers' circle to finish her complete game.
