Toreros Can't Hang On in Five-Hour Marathon at UCSD

San Diego drops 8-7 decision to UC San Diego in 10 innings on Tuesday night

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In a game that lasted nearly five hours and saw a combined 15 pitchers used, the University of San Diego Baseball team was unable to hang on to a five-run lead, losing 8-7 in 10 innings at UC San Diego Tuesday evening.

Despite being ahead by a 7-5 margin entering the bottom of the eighth inning at Triton Ballpark, San Diego couldn't extend its winning streak to six as UCSD scored in each of the final three innings, capped off by a wild pitch that scored the game winner.

The Toreros broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh when Gage Mestas recorded an RBI groundout, scoring Aden Howard

San Diego then added on in the eighth when Gage Springer singled up the middle to give USD a two-run lead, which scored Howard.

Then the Tritons came back and took the lead without recording a hit. UCSD (3-4) got an RBI walk in the eighth on an unearned run and an RBI walk in the ninth before the wild pitch.

San Diego once again got the bats going early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the Toreros' at-bats in the third inning. Jayden Lobliner was credited with three RBI in the first three innings. He got an infield single in the first inning, scoring CJ Moran, before blasting his fourth home run in the last five games to left, plating Gabe Springer

Before Lobliner's home run, USD had back-to-back doubles from Moran and Springer. To put the stamp on the third inning, Andrew Gauna hit his first home run in a Torero uniform to left field.

The Tritons then responded for three in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to knot the game at four.

Porter Rovin, who appeared in two games earlier this season, made his first start of the season, going 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out five.

Hayden Cody finished the third inning before the duo of Nate DeSchryver and Logan Piper combined to log 3.2 innings of scoreless work with five strikeouts.

Fernando Palencia, Chaz McRoberts and Caleb Sebek finished the game to round out USD's seven pitchers.

Up next, USD returns to Fowler Park this weekend as they host Michigan for a three-game series from Friday to Sunday. First pitch between the Toreros and Wolverines Friday is set for 6:05 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Braden Suprenant and Mike Gosling on the call.
