SAN DIEGO — In a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament San Diego Regional first-round matchup, Torero men's tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over UC Irvine, on Friday afternoon at Hogan Tennis Center.
The dangerous Dutch duo of
Stian Klaassen and
Manvydas Balciunas continued rolling to 5-1 on the season. Starting the day off on fire, the pair went up 4-0 en route to a 6-4 win to finish first in doubles play. Right behind them, freshmen
Vincent Marysko and
Luc Wieland teamed up for the second time, as the duo clinched the doubles point for the Toreros with a 6-4 victory to put USD ahead 1-0.
San Diego didn't let up after doubles, as on every court, the Toreros won the first set, with five matches ending in straight sets. Shortly after clinching the doubles point, Marysko cruised to win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to double USD's lead. Getting back to winning ways in singles play was sophomore
Adrien Berrut as he also dominated in his match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, to give his team a 3-0 lead.
Newly-ranked ITA No. 116 in singles, Klaassen clinched the dual for the Toreros as he won his first set 6-4 before improving to a second set 6-2 finish.
The remaining matches would play out, as Balciunas, also new to the rankings as the No. 103 singles player, battled to a third-set super tiebreaker in his main court debut. After winning his first set 6-4, then losing the second 3-6, he fought to a super tiebreaker in which he ultimately lost, 6-10.
Fourth-year Toreros
Lambert Ruland and
Neo Niedner also played out their matches with thrilling finishes. Niedner won the first set of his match 7-5 before an even longer second set that finished with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win to get back into the win column. Ruland also got back to winning ways as he won his first set 6-4 before an exhausting 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win of his own.
An impressive showing in singles play, especially from the bottom three courts, helped the Toreros settle the overall score at 6-1 against the Anteaters.
