Toreros Fall to Undefeated Trojans in 10 Innings at Dedeaux Field

Late-game rally helps No. 25 USC win back-and-forth affair in Los Angeles on Wednesday night

LOS ANGELES — In a back-and-forth affair at Dedeaux Field Wednesday that lasted more than four hours, San Diego baseball was unable to take down No. 25 USC, falling 7-6 in 10 innings.

Hayden Cody, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth with no outs, keeping the game tied at six, couldn't find the same success in the 10th as the Trojans scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Third baseman Cade Martinez saved a couple of runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Martinez dove toward the line and fired a bullet to first baseman CJ Moran to strand a couple of runs in scoring position.

That play helped push San Diego (7-9, 0-0 WCC) to a three-run seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Connor Meidroth that scored Moran. Gabe Springer then dashed home on a wild pitch before Aden Howard and Andrew Gauna walked and Gage Mestas drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Meidroth.

Three of San Diego's six runs came on wild pitches from the Trojans (17-0, 3-0 Big Ten), who had four of them on the evening.

Moran scored on a ball that got away from the Trojans' catcher to cut USD's deficit back to one, 4-3 in the fifth, before Springer plated the second run for the Toreros Wednesday on a wild pitch in the fourth for San Diego's first lead of the game.

Earlier in the frame and after USC scored the game's first run in the third inning, USD immediately punched back as Jayden Lobliner launched an opposite-field solo home run for his fifth of the season.

Porter Rovin, who came out of relief in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday at California got the midweek start for head coach Brock Ungricht. The sophomore southpaw went three innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out three.

Rovin got out of some trouble in the first, stranding a couple of Trojans at the corners, before retiring the side in order in the second inning. In his third and final frame, Rovin allowed a double and single to begin the inning before giving up an RBI groundout. He then picked off a runner at second base and got a groundout to end the inning.

Nate DeSchryver and Jagger Edwards entered in relief of Rovin. DeSchryver worked the fourth inning and Edwards took the fifth and sixth frames.

Logan Piper allowed a run in the seventh and got the first out of the eighth before Cody completed the inning.
