SAN DIEGO — No. 46 San Diego women's tennis won its third straight to start conference play, a blitzing sweep of Santa Clara, 4-0 at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
With the doubles point taking 37 minutes and the Toreros needing just an hour and 17 minutes to clean things up in singles, the match was just inside two hours, half of some full collegiate tennis matches which can take upwards of four hours.
The Toreros set the tone in doubles, earning the point on two of the three courts. On court three, the underclassman duo of Ines Leon and Hannah Read wasted no time, running out a dominant 6-0 shutout win in their second ever match together. On court one, the freshman pairing of Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova followed with a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point. The second court pairing of Charlotte Keitel and Kristina Nordikyan was left unfinished a game away from a third victory at 5-3, with the doubles point already secured.
Singles play was equally one-sided. First, on court two, Krebs Hyllested made quick work of Lizanne Boyer, 6-1, 6-2, dropping just three games across two sets. So did Read, the No. 109 ranking sophomore from St. Albans, England, who stayed locked in from the jump on court three — routing Anna Rahman 6-3, 6-0 in clinical fashion. Rounding out the match, Shmakova won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to bring the match to 4-0 and wrap up the sweep just an hour and 17 minutes into singles play.
Three additional courts were left unfinished in second sets. Leon was up a set and Nordikyan a game away from victory again when their respective matches were called.
