San Diego Baseball Drops Series Opener at Cal

Toreros fall by 11-1 margin on Friday night at Stu Gordon Stadium

BERKELEY, Calif. — In the opener of the three-day, four-game series at UC Berkeley, San Diego Baseball lost 11-1 at Stu Gordon Stadium.

The Toreros took a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly RBI by Aden Howard, scoring Jayden Lobliner, who tripled on the previous at-bat to center field.

Lobliner, who was an All-West Coast Conference Second Team selection last year, went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, also adding a double to be a home run shy of the cycle in the cleanup spot of Brock Ungricht's lineup.

After San Diego (7-4, 0-0 WCC) scored its run in the second, UC Berkeley (10-4, 0-0 ACC) answered back with an RBI double.

The Golden Bears then scored another run in the third before adding four runs in the fourth and sixth frames.

Diego Gutierrez got the start for USD. He went 3.2 innings and struck out six. Jagger Edwards then came to complete the fourth inning before working the fifth and sixth innings.

Phoenix Brant then made his first collegiate pitching appearance, getting two outs before Aídan Gonzalez wrapped up the quartet of pitchers against the Golden Bears.

San Diego continues its four-game series with UC Berkeley Saturday. It will be a doubleheader between the Toreros and the Golden Bears with the first game beginning at 1 p.m. followed by the second game slated for 5 p.m. Both games will be televised on the ACC Network via ESPN+.
