DeSchryver and Frize Stifle San Francisco in 9-2 Win

Five Toreros notch multi-hit games as Toreros prevail in series opener at Benedetti Diamond

SAN FRANCISCO — Five different players in San Diego baseball's lineup recorded multi-hit games and the pitching duo of Nate DeSchryver and Drake Frize allowed just one run each in the Toreros' 9-2 win at San Francisco to open a three-game West Coast Conference series in the Bay Area.

San Diego (13-18, 6-4 WCC) scored eight of its nine runs over the final five innings against the Dons (16-15, 7-3 WCC) at Benedetti Diamond.

A quartet of Toreros – CJ Moran, Cade Martinez, Gage Mestas, and reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week Andrew Gauna – recorded three-hit games, while Phoenix Brant logged a pair of hits.

Overall, the final four spots in San Diego's lineup went a combined 9-for-16 with eight runs scored, five RBI, three doubles and two hit by pitches.

DeSchryver threw the first four innings, allowing a run and a walk on three hits while striking out a season-high seven batters.

Then Frize, who got the win and moved to 2-4, came in to finish the final five innings, allowing a hit, a run and a walk while matching his longest appearance of the season.

A couple of freshmen helped the Toreros strike first, a trend that continued for the fifth straight game. Brant registered a one-out double down the left field line before Diego Gonzalez brought him home on a base hit to right field.

After San Diego gave up a run in the fourth, the USD offense punched back with one in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

San Francisco responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning before the Toreros sealed the win with two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

NOTABLE
  • San Diego recorded its 11th straight win over the Dons, a streak that started on May 25, 2022, during the WCC Tournament and also includes the Toreros claiming the conference regular season title in 2024.
  • Gauna, who was named WCC Player of the Week on Monday, recorded a double in the first inning to mark his sixth straight game with at least one extra base hit and his seventh such performance in his last eight games.
  • He also extended his hitting streak to eight games and has raised his batting average nearly 150 points from .211 to .355 since February 28.
  • DeSchryver nearly matched his performance from his first USD start last week against Santa Clara, limiting the Dons to one run on three hits. He now has 12 strikeouts over his last two outings.
  • Frize, who went five innings, tied his longest appearance of the season and threw his most since going five innings at San Diego State (February 22).
  • Moran recorded his fourth three-hit game of the season, while also logging an RBI triple in the sixth and a run-scoring double in the seventh. It is the second time in five games the sophomore has been one hit shy of a cycle.
  • The sophomore also extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
  • Mestas posted his second multi-hit game in his last three contests and is hitting .545 (6-for-11) during that span.
  • Martinez logged his second straight multi-hit game and first three-hit game in a Torero uniform. He also registered his first three-run game this season.
  • Brant, who got his third start in the Toreros' last four games, recorded his first collegiate mutli-hit performance with a 2-for-5 afternoon that saw him score three runs and rip a double.
  • Gonzalez, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI, registered two sacrifice bunts in the sixth and the seventh. It is the second time this season the freshman has logged multiple sacrifice hits and the first time since USD faced Creighton (February 21).
