SAN DIEGO — In a rivalry match between the WCC's unbeaten teams, No. 16 San Diego men's tennis battled to a 4-1 victory over No. 29 Pepperdine in the home finale.
With the win, USD clinches at least a share of it's fifth straight WCC regular season title.
The Toreros also collect their 10th straight victory, now dropping just one point in the last six matches played.
A rain delay before the beginning of the match didn't slow down San Diego as the Toreros swiftly clinched the doubles point. The return of the 2024 ITA All-American National Championship duo of Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen continued their winning ways as they finished first in doubles play with a 6-1 victory, moving to 2-0 on the week and the season. The freshman duo of Vincent Marysko and Manvydas Balciunas also improved to 2-0 this week and season, winning 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for USD.
Singles play started competitive between the two sides in what looked like it could be another marathon match as four separate matches went to 5-5 in the first set.
Balciunas pulled away from his close first set and won the last two games to take it at 7-5 before winning due to his opponent having to retire midway through the second set to double the USD lead. Adrien Berrut was able to finish his singles match after his doubles match was abandoned up at 5-3, as he won the first set 6-3 before a back and forth second set in which he won 7-6 (7-4) gave San Diego a 3-0 lead.
After dropping a close two sets on court six, San Diego's lead became 3-1 before Oliver Tarvet won his fifth career match against Pepperdine's No. 1 singles player. Tarvet won the competitive first set 7-6 (7-3) before winning 6-3 in the second set to clinch the dual for USD in the crucial conference rivalry victory.
