Piper and Gauna Headline USD's Efforts in Loss to Seattle U

Toreros score three unanswered runs on Friday night before dropping 7-4 decision to Redhawks at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball scored three unanswered runs on Friday night as it attempted to erase an early deficit but could not complete the comeback, falling to Seattle U by a 7-4 margin in the first-ever WCC matchup between the Toreros (13-22, 6-7 WCC) and the Redhawks (13-19, 8-5 WCC).

After SU created its early 7-1 advantage by scoring in three of the game's first four frames, USD plated two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull back within striking distance.

Two-plus scoreless innings from Logan Piper helped keep San Diego there. The graduate lefty fired 2.1 run-free frames, allowing only one hit, walking only one, and striking out three as he matched his longest outing as a Torero.

Andrew Gauna continued to swing a hot bat by going 3-for-4, including a double to the left-center field gap to lead off the sixth inning. Jayden Lobliner followed that with a single that dropped into right field before Phoenix Brant walked to load the bases. Then Connor Meidroth drove Gauna home on a sacrifice fly. An RBI grounder from Jayton Greer allowed Lobliner to dash home a few pitches later and make it 7-3.

In the seventh, a walk from Diego Gonzalez and back-to-back hit by pitches from Gage Mestas and CJ Moran set up a bases loaded opportunity with no outs for a second straight inning. Gauna capitalized by sending a sharp single through the right side, scoring Gonzalez for the Toreros' only run of the inning (and San Diego's final scoring effort of the evening).

All seven of Seattle U's runs came in the game's first 3.2 innings before Piper, Christian Garcia, Aidan Gonzalez, and Chaz McRoberts threw 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

NOTABLE
  • Gauna, who went 3-for-5 in the No. 2 spot of the Torero lineup, registered his seventh three-hit game of the season and also extended his team-leading active hit streak to nine games.
  • Piper tied a season-long in innings (2.1), marking the most he's thrown in a single game  since his Torero debut at Long Beach State (February 17).
  • McRoberts entered in relief of Piper with runners on first and second and one out in the top of the eighth and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam by notching a pair of clutch strikeouts. He went on to register 1.2 scoreless innings, which marked the fourth straight appearance in which the sophomore has not allowed an earned run — a stretch that has spanned 4.1 innings and dates back to April 7 at UC Irvine.
  • Lobliner and Cade Martinez both went 2-for-4. Friday marked Lobiner's team-leading 14th multi-hit game of 2026 while Martinez recorded his sixth game with at least two hits.
  • Brian Matusz was celebrated in a onfield pregame ceremony in which his jersey was retired. A new graphic honoring the late Torero Legend and his signature #17 was unveiled on Fowler Park's right-center field wall.
