LOS ANGELES — A class free kick and a simple mistake proved the difference for 20th-ranked UCLA's goals as Las Toreras dropped a 2-0 decision at the Bruins – who started the season ranked ninth – on Thursday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
The defeat ended USD's 10-match non-conference undefeated streak that started in Head Coach
Greg LaPorte's first season in 2024, through a program-first all seven matches of the 2025 non-con season and included USD's 2026 season-opening nil-nil draw with Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Aug. 12.Â
"I was really proud of the way we competed tonight," LaPorte said. "UCLA is a very good team, but I don't think the 2-0 score tells the whole story. We had three really good opportunities that could have changed the game – one off a corner, Maquena's [O'Callaghan] chance that nearly found the underside of the crossbar and Amanda [Anders] rounding the goalkeeper. Lily [Johnson] was a handful for them all night and gave us a real presence going forward. We came here believing we could get a result, and I thought there were moments where we absolutely could have."
UCLA scored on a light foul that led to a free kick goal in the side netting and a turnover by a USD first year that led to another nice finish in the side netting. San Diego redshirt sophomore goalkeeper and defending WCC Defensive Player of the Week
Chloe Walls posted five saves to keep the Toreros in pursuit of the result.Â
"There are things we need to improve, but I'm proud of the fight, the belief and the way this group competed against a nationally ranked team on the road."
