Swim and Dive Open the New Season Versus the Aztecs

Four freshman made their collegiate debuts as the Toreros took on crosstown rival San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — For the first time this fall, the San Diego swimming and diving were in action on Friday afternoon as the Toreros raced against crosstown rival San Diego State in the pentathlon at the USD Sports Center Pool.

The meet's pentathlon put 18 Toreros in the water for the 100-yard freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley, and 11 of them competed in all four 50-yard events for a nine-race afternoon.

Junior Sydney Wilson led the way in the 400 individual medley race with a first-place finish in 4:29.58 while also turning in a team-best 1:02.66 finish in the 100 individual medley and clocked 59.69 in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Charlotte Ames finished in fifth place with a time of 4:44.66 and sophomore Emma Welch followed her with a seventh place finish of 4:57.51.

Ames was one of the four freshmen making their collegiate debuts, as Eleni Charnas, Heléna Huettemeyer, and Kayelee Mathiesen raced nine times apiece. Huettemeyer placed sixth in both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.71) and the 50 breaststroke (32.29), and Charnas led USD in the 50 freestyle with a sixth-place 25.55.

Among the returners, senior Elise Sullivan turned in the Toreros' best finish in the 50-yard events, placing fourth in the 50 breaststroke in 31.86, and added an eight-place 1:08.97 in the 100 breaststroke. In the 50 freestyle, Charnas finished sixth in 25.55 while Alexandra Ostrom followed in seventh in 25.80, and Claudia Dumais joined the pair in the top 10 of the race with a time of 25.84. Sophomore Haley Borja took seventh in the 50 backstroke in 28.95, and three Toreros finished in the top 10 in the 50 breaststroke as Olivia Anfinson followed Sullivan and Huettemeyer by finishing ninth in 33.31.

"The meet is always a check to see where we are after just two weeks of training," USD head swimming and diving coach Mike Keeler said. "We compare returners' times to the previous year's results at the same meet. Freshmen is a little baptism by fire, as it is a lot of events in a short amount of time. Some people are ahead, and others have work to be done. The highlight was junior Sydney Wilson winning the 400 individual medley against a good field with a time that was eight seconds faster than last year. Always nice to win an individual event versus a strong San Diego State team. The team attitude was great throughout the contest. The next meet in two weeks is another check with slightly further distances."

USD will now have two weeks of training before meeting San Diego State again in the SDSU/USD Distance meet at the USD Sports Center Pool on Friday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
