Moll, Leon Claim Doubles Title at USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships

Deming reaches singles quarterfinal as six Toreros compete on home courts for the first time this fall

SAN DIEGO — San Diego women's tennis hosted the fifth annual USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships, where six Toreros took the court and the doubles pairing of Anna Moll and Ines Leon won the tournament title.

Moll and Leon put together a championship run in a bracket that came down to the wire. The Toreros opened in the round of 16 with a 7-6 (7-3) win over San Jose State, taking the tiebreak to move on. They advanced past the quarterfinals when their Arizona State opponents withdrew due to injury, which sent them into the final four matches in the doubles main draw. On championship Sunday, Moll and Leon took down Stanford 7-5 in the semifinals, then came back on court to beat Arizona State 7-5 in the final and clinch the title.

Emily Deming and Lila Bachour opened the tournament for the Toreros with a 6-2 win over Utah in the round of 32. Their run ended against Nevada in the round of 16 as they lost 2-6.

Charlotte Keitel and Maria Shmakova fell 0-6 to San Diego State in the round of 32, but they didn't let it linger, as they came back in the extra matches and beat Grand Canyon 6-4 to finish the week on a win.

Deming and Shmakova also teamed up for two extra matches, as they started with a 6-4 win over Boise State on Saturday, then dropped a 3-6 decision to Arizona State on Sunday, giving both players a full slate of doubles action across the four days.

Deming led San Diego in singles with a run to the quarterfinals as she started with a 7-5, 6-4 win over BYU in the round of 64, then showed her resolve in the round of 32 against Arizona State. After dropping the first set 0-6, she took the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 to move on to the next round. She kept the momentum going with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nevada in the round of 16, before falling to Arizona State in a three-set quarterfinal, 0-6, 6-2, 3-6.

Bachour reached the round of 16 by dropping just 11 games across her first two matches. She beat Utah 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 64, then took down Stanford 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. Arizona State ended her main-draw run in a tight match, 4-6, 6-7 (4-7). Bachour bounced back in the extra matches, dropping just one game in the match against Nevada with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Coming off a first year in which she received WCC Honorable Mention singles honors, sophomore Shmakova also made the round of 16 in the singles main draw. She opened with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Boise State, then rallied to beat Arizona State in the round of 32 after losing the first set 1-6, then taking the last two 7-5, 6-3. In the round of 16, she went the distance with BYU, falling in three sets, 5-6, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7).

Moll opened her singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Nevada in the round of 64. She then lost the first set against BYU in the round of 32, 3-6, dominated in the second, 6-1, but lost the last set, 5-7.

After dropping the round of 64 match in singles play, Leon battled in extra matches, as she dropped the first set 4-6 against UNLV, then won the second 6-2 and closed it out 10-2 in the match tiebreaker. She then fell to Nevada in a tight three-setter, 3-6, 6-2, 11-13 in the match tiebreaker.
