Toreros Defined

What is a Torero? Torero comes from the Spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USD Student Athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge.

Did you know? Before 1961, the USD nickname was the Pioneers!

Each year the USD Athletic Department chooses students who are interested in representing the school to become the mascot. These students perform at Football, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball home games and travel on the road with them to regional and national tournaments. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in and is a great way to meet friends and gain valuable experiences. If you are interested in becoming the Torero, please email Donte Carty at dcarty@sandiego.edu
