Tyler Sutton enters his ninth season as an assistant coach with San Diego in 2021 and his second as the offensive coordinator.

Sutton has risen through San Diego’s coaching ranks over the last eight seasons after joining the Toreros in 2013 as a volunteer offensive assistant before being promoted to assistant coach for the 2014 season. He started coaching the running backs before taking on the special teams coordinator role in 2018. He also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator during his tenure.

He was promoted to offensive coordinator in February 2020. He will also continue to coach the Torero running backs.

In his time with USD, Sutton has been a part of six consecutive seasons of nine or more wins, seven conference championships, five FCS Playoffs appearances, and two FCS playoff wins.

Under his direction at special teams, the Toreros displayed dominant work on the FCS level, producing back-to-back conference special teams players of the year recognitions (Michael Armstead, 2018; Tanner Kuljian, 2019). In 2019, the Toreros ranked highly nationally in several categories, including second in punt returns and fifth in punt return yards allowed.

Sutton has also coached USD’s running backs since 2014. Helping guide an explosive offense with a proven running game, Sutton has shown that player development is one of his greatest strengths. He has mentored at least one all-conference running back in each season, including three seasons with multiple Torero running back selections, as well as the 2016 conference player of the year recipient and FCS All-American, Jonah Hodges.

Sutton has contributed to the success of an explosive Torero offense, which ranked top-10 nationally in scoring offense in back-to-back seasons (2018, 2019).

Prior to coaching in San Diego, Sutton spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, University of Redlands. He served as the Bulldogs’ defensive line coach and added special teams coordinator responsibilities for the 2012 season. Sutton began his coaching career at Granite Hills High School in San Diego County.

Originally from Pomona, Calif., Sutton attended Claremont High School (‘05) before beginning his four-year career as a student-athlete at the University of Redlands (‘09). He was an all-conference performer during his senior season and helped the program win a conference championship in 2007.

Sutton resides in San Diego with his wife, Erin.
