Eli Bisnett-Cobb

Eli Bisnett-Cobb joined the Toreros as the Head Athletic Trainer for Sports Medicine on July 23, 2018.

Bisnett-Cobb boasts a wealth of knowledge and experience after previous stops with two NFL teams and serving as an associate athletic trainer with UC San Diego from 2014-18.

“I am very pleased to announce that Eli has returned to the University of San Diego to serve as our Head Athletic Trainer for Sports Medicine,” said McGillis. “Having previously served on Carolyn Greer's staff, Eli understands first-hand the exceptional culture of care that has been established at USD. I know that our student-athletes' health and welfare will remain at the forefront of our program under his leadership, and I am very excited for our student-athletes, coaches and staff.

“Eli has earned an outstanding reputation as a result of his terrific work at USD, UCSD and in the NFL, and the wealth of experience he brings to our program will be of immense value. Eli is very well-trained and is passionate both about his craft and the student-athletes he serves. I am very confident that his positive energy and leadership style will enable us to build on the great foundation already in place.”

USD is a familiar place for Bisnett-Cobb, having worked as an assistant athletic trainer from 2008-10.

“I am truly honored and excited to be returning to the University of San Diego and rejoining the Torero Family and the sports medicine staff,” said Bisnett-Cobb upon his return. “I would really like to thank Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics Bill McGillis for this tremendous opportunity.”

Bisnett-Cobb filled the void left by longtime Toreros head athletic trainer, Carolyn Greer, who retired after 40 years in the position. Bisnett-Cobb’s first position in collegiate athletics was under Greer’s leadership.

“USD has been a very special place for my family and I for a long time and I’m glad I get to return to such and amazing university and continue to uphold the standard of care for the Torero student-athletes that Carolyn Greer has worked so hard to establish,” said Bisnett-Cobb. “She set the standard really high and I’m honored to be following her. I can’t wait to get started.”

Bisnett-Cobb earned his undergraduate degree in athletic training from Marist College before completing his Masters of Science in Exercise Science from The George Washington University in 2006. While earning his master’s degree, he worked in the athletic department at the university as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

Bisnett-Cobb began his professional career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006, assisting the sports medicine staff with injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitations and emergency medical care to all professional athletes and team personnel.

After two seasons with the Vikings, Bisnett-Cobb made his way west for his first tenure with USD as an assistant athletic trainer providing primary coverage for the men’s soccer, baseball and cross country teams.

Bisnett-Cobb returned to the NFL in 2010, serving as the assistant athletic trainer with the Washington Redskins. He assisted in the management, care, prevention, evaluation, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of all players and team personnel.

During his time with the Redskins, Bisnett-Cobb was also heavily involved in concussion protocol monitoring and record-keeping, maintenance and records of prescription medication usage, and managing a group of seasonal interns.

Bisnett-Cobb returned to San Diego in 2014 as an associate athletic trainer at UC San Diego where he provided primary care for the men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s golf teams.

He took the lead on annually updating the department’s Concussion Management Plan and Concussion Protocol, developing and updating the Hydration Protocol and reviewing the Emergency Action Plans for all UCSD athletic facilities.

Bisnett-Cobb worked closely with the athletic performance director, sports performance coaches, sports nutritionist and mind coach to develop a sports performance unit that worked together to enhance the overall performance and well-being of student-athletes.

Bisnett-Cobb lives in San Diego with his wife, Christie – who played volleyball for USD from 2003-07 – and their two sons, Tyson and Braylen.
