Jack Newell joined University of San Diego men's rowing as an assistant coach in October 2025. In January 2026, he was elevated to Interim Co-Head Coach alongside Costas Ciungan.
Newell comes to San Diego from Notre Dame, where he led the Irish to a third-place finish at the ACRA National Championship Regatta and grew the size of the team by over 50% during the 2024-25 season.
Prior to Notre Dame, Newell spent three years as the head coach for the men’s team at Clemson, and two years as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt. Newell began his coaching career at his alma mater, Dayton, following his graduation in 2016.
He spent six summers from 2018-2023 coaching for the Old Lyme Rowing Association/ Blood Street Sculls, in Old Lyme, Conn. Newell has also spent five summers working with Sparks Rowing Camps, first as a director and more recently as a coach. Newell is a USRowing Level II certified coach.
Newell was a four-year rower during his time at Dayton, graduating with a degree in Sport Management and a minor in Business Administration. Prior to rowing at the collegiate level, Newell rowed at LaSalle College High School in Philadelphia.
