SAINT LOUIS, Mo. â€" Fifty-nine student athletes have been named to the 23rd All-Pioneer Football League teams, Tuesday. All selections were made by the league's coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes. The Toreros were represented with three first team picks, six second team selections, and seven honorable mention honorees.
Senior offensive tackle Pono Keni (Kailua, Hawaii) earned his second straight first team selection. He was joined on the first team offense by senior fullback Chris Campano (San Diego, Calif.) and senior guard Jeff Starr (Norwalk, Conn.). Second team selections went to junior wide receiver Brian Riley (Rancho Bernardo, Calif.), sophomore tight end Ross Dwelley (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), senior defensive end Joe Nomellini (Stockton, Calif.), sophomore defensive end Jonathan Petersen (Poway, Calif.), junior cornerback Jamal Agnew (San Diego, Calif.) and junior cornerback Devyn Bryant (San Diego, Calif.).
Toreros selected honorable mention include junior running back Jereke Armstrong (Escondido, Calif.), sophomore safety Ryan Clark (Brentwood, Calif.), sophomore safety Colton Giorgi (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), junior linebacker Nic Henson (Chandler, Ariz.), freshman quarterback Anthony Lawrence (La Mesa, Calif.), sophomore offensive lineman Miles McArdle (Napa, Calif.), and sophomore wide receiver Justin Priest (El Dorado Hills, Calif.).
Stetson safety junior Donald Payne, the league's Defensive Player of the Year, and Morehead State senior defensive back Justin Grier were each unanimous (i.e. received all 10 possible first-team votes) selections to this season's All-PFL teams. In addition, Payne's first-team selection is his third consecutive first-team nod, with one season remaining.
Seven PFL student-athletes earned their second consecutive First-Team All-PFL honor â€" Davidson senior wide receiver William Morris, San Diego senior offensive lineman Pono Keni, Campbell redshirt senior offensive lineman Ugonna Awuruonye, Marist fifth-year defensive lineman Demetrius Williams, Dayton senior linebacker Christopher Beaschler and Jacksonville senior linebacker Grady Redding. In addition, Drake fifth-year linebacker John Hugunin and Dayton senior placekicker William Will returned to the league's first-team after a one-year hiatus â€" each also earning first-team selection in 2013. Ten of the 11 league members had at least one student-athlete named First-Team All-PFL, league co-champion Dayton leading the way with eight first-team honorees.
In addition to the 59 student-athletes recognized on the league's first and second teams, 72 student-athletes received honorable mention recognition.
The Academic All-PFL team, highlighted by the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
