Men's Soccer Wins WCC Opener

The USD men's soccer team won their 8th straight match with tonight's 1-0 West Coast Conference opener over Saint Mary's College at Torero Stadium. With the win the Toreros improved to 9-2-2 (1-0 WCC) while Saint Mary's falls to 5-9 (0-2 WCC).

USD dominated the game offensively as they got off 25 shots to the Gaels 6. Despite holding a 13-4 advantage in the first half, both teams went to intermission knotted at 0-0. The lone goal of the evening came in the 77th minute as sophomore midfielder Calle Rendahl scored from 15 yards out on the left side after receiving an assist from fellow Swede Tommy Von Bromsen.

Torero freshman goalie Lance Friesz tallied 4 saves on his way to posting his third consecutive shutout victory. It was his 8th shutout in goal this season for the Toreros. Saint Mary's goalie Kellan Wilson had a solid evening with 6 saves. Torero senior MF Eric Wunderle, last week's WCC Player of the Game, led the way with 9 shots on the evening.

The Toreros return Sunday to host the San Francisco Dons at 2:30 pm.
