Saint Mary's defeated San Diego by a score of 2-1 in women's soccer action Friday night in Moraga. The Gaels netted two first half goals to turn away the Toreros. The victory is the Gaels' second consecutive and four out of their last five. With the win the Gaels improve to 3-1 in West Coast Conference play and 7-7-1 overall. San Diego falls to 7-6-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Gaels broke a 0-0 tie at the 21:18 mark of the first half when Saint Mary's senior defender Jessica Poole headed a Chelsea Montero crossing pass into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead and her first goal of the season. Saint Mary's didn't waste any time scoring their second goal of the game, coming 2:01 after Poole's goal. The Gaels' Sarah Takekawa scored her first goal of the season on a shot from close to 20 yards away for a 2-0 lead.
San Diego answered with a goal at the 42:43 mark of the first half when Michelle Rowe headed a Brenna Mullen corner kick past Saint Mary's goalkeeper Alicia Artuso for a 2-1 score.
