San Diego 12-3 After Sweep of Portland

Junior Devon Forster led all players with 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as No. 19 San Diego (12-3) cruised past host Portland (10-5) in the West Coast Conference opener for both clubs. Individual game scores went (30-26, 30-19, 30-28). The Toreros received nine kills from freshman Emily Haas, while Lindsey Sherburne dished out 35 assists and 10 digs. San Diego hit for .248 in the match.

The Pilots out-hit the Toreros, .226 to .212 in the first game, tallying 13 kills, but USD held the advantage and came out with a 30-26 win. The Toreros took the Pilots out of system in game two, notching 16 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Portland managed just six kills and hit for -.029. San Diego pulled out a 30-19 victory in the game.

The Pilots came back after the break and stepped it up. The score went back and forth until Sheena Surplus pounded out two setter dumps back to back for a 20-19 lead. USD pushed for points and regained the lead, but Portland came to within one point (29-28) on back-to-back kills by Monique Kettler. San Diego's Emily Haas spiked one down the line for game and match point.

Sara Vercruyssen and Monique Kettler led the Pilots with seven kills each. Murphy McClenahan and Laura Pappas each tallied 10 digs, while Sheena Surplus posted 24 assists. Liz Lord added three block assists on the night. As a team, Portland hit for .129 and out-blocked the Toreros five to four.
