The University of San Diego women's basketball team defeated UC San Diego 86-76 in an exhibition game at UCSD's RIMAC Arena on Saturday afternoon. USD senior Marta Menuez finished with game-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds, connecting on seven-of-nine shots from the field. Torero sophomore Jamie Corwin produced 18 points in her 2003-04 debut, going 5-of-5 from three-point range. Redshirt sophomore Polly Dong added 16 points.
The Tritons trailed by just three points at halftime, 42-39, closing the period with back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore point guard Andrea Herold and junior Lauren Sargent. Menuez, USD's leading returning scorer and rebounder from 2002-03, had game-highs of 10 points and sixrebounds at the break.
In the second half, the Toreros scored the first four points and eventually got out to a 60-50 lead on a three-point play by freshman Ashley Voisinet. USD increased the margin to 13, its largest of the game, on a Jamie Corwin three-pointer with over eight minutes to go. The host Tritons twice got back within six down the stretch, but could not get any closer.
The University of San Diego shot 50 percent for the game, while UCSD hit on 36 percent of its field goals. USD committed 25 turnovers to 18 by the home side, but out-rebounded the Tritons, 42-36.
