Jamie Corwin's baseline jumper with 1:42 remaining gave San Diego a five point lead and the host Toreros held on to defeat Pacific 70-66 Sunday afternoon at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. Corwin matched a career-high, leading all scorers with 19 points. Three other Toreros reached double figures in scoring as San Diego improved its record to 3-6. Marta Menuez cleared a game-high nine rebounds and added 15 points for USD. Pacific (0-7) remains winless this season through seven games.
San Diego point guard Polly Dong directed a Torero offense that turned the ball over just 13 times Sunday. Dong finished with 11 points and senior teammate Melissa Padgett turned in another solid performance, scoring 14 and totaling eight rebounds.
The Tigers played without injured center Gillian d'Hondt who leads Pacific in scoring and rebounding. Despite the absence of d'Hondt, Pacific led 43-39 mid-way through the second half. Guard Jessie Menkens paced the Tigers with 18 points and teammate Corinne Wong scored 12.
San Diego has won two-of-three and will try to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when they host Oral Roberts (5-4) Monday night at 7pm.
