The USD Toreros improved to 3-1 in home games with tonight's 81-66 victory over UC San Diego before 1,008 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the win the Toreros improve to 3-8 while the Tritons fall to 1-6. USD freshman guard Michael Hubbard led six Toreros in double-digit socring with a season-best 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor. Sophomore forward Nick Lewis posted his second straight double-double (14/11), and Brice Vounang and Brad Lechtenberg each chipped in with 14 points. Following Christmas the Toreros head to Tempe, Arizona to take part in the azcentral.com Hoops Classic, hosted by the Arizona State Sundevils Dec. 29-30. USD will play the host ASU Sundevils on Monday, Dec. 29th at 5 pm (4 pm PST).
In the first half the Toreros jumped out to a 23-7 advantage with 12:49 to go, but the Tritons stormed back to get within 1 point at 27-26 with 2:14 left in the half. USD scored the final 5 points to take a 32-26 intermission lead.
In the second half USD jumped ahead by 11 points early on, then bumped their lead to as many as 15 points (60-45) with 9:18 to go. Once again the scrappy UCSD Tritons made a game of it, getting within 4 points at 60-56 with 7:10 to go. Over the final 7 minutes USD's depth and experience did the Tritons in as the Toreros outscored the visitors, 21-10. UCSD was paced by Parker Berling with 17 points.
