San Diego, CA- Polly Dong scored a career high 17 points and San Diego hit 9-of-21 three-point attempts in a 65-58 win over visiting Georgetown during first round action of the Surf 'N Slam Classic at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. It was the third consecutive win for a San Diego (5-6) team that now faces No. 3 Texas Tech in the Tournament Championship game Tuesday night at 8pm. Texas Tech defeated Maryland 65-53 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Lindsay Helvey scored a career high 16 and senior forward Melissa Padgett added 13 rebounds for USD. Helvey connected on 4-of-8 three-point goals to allow San Diego a 42% shooting clip from beyond the arc.
Carmen Bruce led Georgetown (6-3) with 14 points and Varda Tamoulianis totaled 13. All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson went 5-of-13 from the floor to reach double figures with 10 points, while leading the Hoyas in rebounding with seven.
The sophomore backcourt combination of Dong, Helvey and Brandi Collato lit up Georgetown's defense. The trio accounted for all nine of San Diego's three-point baskets, with six coming in the second half. Dong, who leads the West Coast Conference in assists, handed out six on Sunday.
