The host USD Toreros battled back from 20 points down in the second half to take a brief lead, but lost their cross-town battle to San Diego State tonight before a sellout crowd at the Jenny Craig Pavilion by the score of 66-63. Senior guard Brad Lechtenberg made five second half three-pointers to help rally the Toreros and Brice Vounang scored 21 points. The loss drops USD to 1-5 as they head to Utah this Saturday for a road game against the Utes.
San Diego State (4-2) won their second straight game against USD after the Toreros had won the previous four meetings. The Aztecs, behind Brandon Heath's 27 points, had taken a 40-27 halftime lead. Three minutes into the second half the Aztecs extended their lead to 20 points at 49-29. It was at this time that Lechtenberg started heating up and would finish with a personal-best 5 three-pointers made.
It was a Lechtenberg's three with 2:53 to go that gave the Toreros their first lead at 60-59. Heath nailed a trey at the 1:42 mark for a one point lead, and with :29 ticks left on the clock the USD bench was called for a technical. Heath made both free throws for the final 66-63 score.
