San Luis Obispo, CA - The No. 21 Cal Poly women?s soccer team goes to 9-0 as they defeated the University of San Diego 3-1 in a non-conference match Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
In the 50th minute, Cal Poly were firsts on the score board as Stephanie Hedien (Renton, WA) crossed the ball from a corner kick to Heidi McQuitty (Solvang, CA), who volleyed a 10 yard shot to the back of the net. This is McQuitty?s first ever collegiate goal.
In the 58th minute, the Mustangs extended their lead to 2-0 as Alix Cohen (Ladera Ranch, CA) blasted a 25 yard shot on the left side to the upper right corner of the net. This is Cohen?s first career collegiate goal and proved to be the game-winning goal.
USD would strike back at the 85th minute as a Cal Poly defender took out a Torero forward 20 yards out on the left side. This set up Brenna Mullen for for the first Torero goal of the game. Mullen curled the ball to the upper right corner of the net.
The Mustangs would put the game away in the 87th minute as freshman forward Sharon Day (Costa Mesa, CA) took on two USD defenders creating a shot that hit the far left post, rebounding back into the middle of the Toreros box. Day?s teammate Kelsey Carroll (Mission Viejo, CA) was there to put the rebound from 10 yards out into the back of the net. Carroll has four goals and four assists, with a team-leading 12 points on the season.
Greta Shirdon (Santa Barbara, CA), in goal for the Mustangs, records her fourth win in four starts, facing 14 shots, saving 6. The goal allowed by the Mustangs is just the second goal on the year.
