(San Diego, CA) - The nationally ranked Toreros took another step towards earning its sixth consecutive berth into the NCAA College Cup Tournament, defeating WCC rival Gonzaga 1-0 in overtime Sunday at Torero Stadium. No. 21 San Diego (10-7-1, 4-1 WCC) scored three minutes into the overtime session on sophomore Veronica Ambort's second game-winner of the season. Gonzaga (10-8, 2-3 WCC), who was beaten 1-0 Friday at Santa Clara, has now lost two straight.

Despite holding a decisive advantage in shots (21-8) and corner kicks (8-0), USD received a real scare midway through the second half when Gonzaga's Sarah Hawkins was awarded a penalty kick. A shot towards the lower left corner was batted away by San Diego's freshman goalkeeper Karen Cook. The Torero defense limited the Zags to just two shots on goal Sunday.

Freshman sensation Amy Epsten rattled off seven shots for San Diego. Her cross in overtime setup a shot attempt for teammate Brittany Young. After Young's attempt caromed off the top post, Ambort cleaned up a scrum in front of the Gonzaga net by putting away the game-winner.

San Diego remains amongst the leaders in the West Coast Conference with a 4-1 league record. Just two games remain on USD's regular season schedule, traveling to play at Pepperdine Friday, October 29, before returning home to face Loyola Marymount Friday, November 5.
