SAN DIEGO, CA- Portland ran San Diego's winless streak to nine with a 78-56 victory over the Toreros in West Coast Conference women's basketball action Thursday night at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Pilots (12-14; 7-6 WCC) received a game-high 17 points from sophomore guard Whitney Grant. Classmate Lauren Himmelspach went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and finished with 16 points. San Diego (6-20; 1-12 WCC) trailed by eight at the half.
The Toreros were paced by Marta Menuez's 15 points and nine rebounds, despite playing just 16 minutes. Menuez, a senior from Bodega, California, went 7-for-14 from the floor, coming off the bench for the first time this year. USD sophomore Jamie Corwin cleared seven rebounds and senior Melissa Padgett added four assists.
The Pilots defeated San Diego 75-63 back on January 29th in Portland. The Toreros led by as many as six in that contest, a stark contrast from Thursday's game in which USD trailed by as many as 26. Portland shot 52% from the floor in the second half and converted on 21-of-28 free throws on the night.
San Diego hosts Gonzaga in its regular season finale Saturday night at 7pm in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
