PORTLAND, Ore. - Playing the last home game of his college career, Casey Frandsen scored 21 points, including six 3-pointers as Portland beat San Diego 89-78 on Saturday night.
Frandsen hit four 3-pointers in the first half as the Pilots (11-16, 5-9 West Coast Conference) led by as many as 17 points and finally settled for a 41-28 halftime lead.
Portland widened its margin to 56-34 six minutes into the second half after an 18-6 run.
San Diego (4-25, 1-13 WCC), which won the conference tournament last year, narrowed the deficit to 65-55 on a 3-pointer by Brad Lechtenberg. But two minutes later came the turning point in the game. On a 3-pointer by Frandsen, San Diego's Nick Lewis was called for an off-the-ball foul. Lewis was then assessed a technical for arguing the call.
Portland's Eugene Jeter his two free throws for the technical and Patrick Galos added one for the foul to make Portland's lead 78-59.
San Diego trimmed it to 86-74 on another 3-pointer from Lechtenberg with 2:09 left, but Portland went on to run out the clock and seal the victory.
Donald Wilson added 18 points for the Pilots, including three baskets on alley-oop passes from Frandsen.
Lechtenberg led the Torreros with a career-high 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Brandon Gay added 21 points and nine rebounds for San Diego.
