(San Diego, CA) - Amy Epsten scored in the 35th minute and San Diego added a pair of goals in the second half to defeat visiting UC Irvine 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium. San Diego (1-1) out-shot the Anteaters 18-6, allowing rookie goalkeeper Karen Cook to post a shutout in her second collegiate start. The Toreros extended its one goal advantage early in the second half when Michelle Rowe (pictured) headed in a cross from teammate Marie-Claude Henry. Freshman Vanessa Vella netted a free kick moments after Rowe's goal at the 60 minute mark. Vella and Epsten, two of four freshmen starters for the Toreros Sunday, each totaled four shots. San Diego rebounded from a 4-0 loss to UCLA Friday and now prepare for a two-game road trip to Colorado UC Irvine (1-1) came to San Diego after winning its season opener 1-0 over San Jose State. Anteater goalie Melissa Welliver made eight saves in the losing effort.
