San Diego Falls to No. 18 Long Beach State

(Long Beach, CA) - The University of San Diego women's volleyball team lost a four-game match with No. 18 Long Beach State Tuesday night at the Pyramid. Game scores went (30-25, 26-30, 30-17, 30-22). San Diego (6-4) evened the match at a game apiece winning in the second frame, but Long Beach State (9-0) won convincingly in game four and registered its ninth win in as many tries this season. USD will have over a week off before next taking the floor at home against WCC member Portland Friday, October 1st at 7pm.

As reported by Chris DeConna (Long Beach State Media Relations)...

Alexis Crimes paced The Beach with 17 kills (.406 attack percentage) and eight blocks. Mariko Crum added 11 kills for a .450 hitting percentage and a career-high nine blocks (4 BS, 5 BA). Jillian Mazzarella notched her fifth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs, to go along with five kills. Heather Laudato posted a team-high 15 digs and a career-high three aces. As a team, LBSU out-blocked USD, 21.0-6.0. Devon Forster led San Diego with a match-high 31 kills in the losing effort.

Long Beach State raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back for the 30-25 game one victory. Hetzer keyed the set with three kills and three blocks. Crum also chipped in with three kills. Neither team hit particularly well, as LBSU connected for a .194 clip (13-6-35), while USD hit for a .077 clip (16-13-39). San Diego pulled to within three points at 21-18, after a 49er attack error. However, The Beach countered with a 4-2 run, courtesy of a Mazzarella kill. LBSU maintained the five-point cushion the rest of the way.

San Diego rallied to square the match at 1-1 after a 30-26 game two victory. Forster paced USD with eight kills in the set, raising her match total to 17. USD hit just .155 (21-12-58) in the frame, while LBSU connected for just nine kills. San Diego broke the game open, after the score was tied at 6-6, with a 10-4 run to push its lead to 16-10 (Forster kill). San Diego held a 28-22 lead, before Long Beach State went on a 4-0 run to trim the lead to 28-26 (USD attack error). However two straight Torero kills proceeded for the 30-26 win.

LBSU regained the match lead with a 30-17 game three victory. The 49ers trailed 4-1 early on, but then proceeded with an 11-1 run capped off by a Kristen Voyson kill to take a 12-5 lead. Long Beach State outscored USD 18-12 the rest of the way. Crimes heated up with five kills in the frame. As a team, LBSU connected for a .387 attack percentage (16-4-31), and out-blocked San Diego, 4-2.

The 49ers closed out the Toreros, 30-22 in the fourth set on a Voyson and Crum block.
