San Diego, ranked No. 48 in Baseball America's Preseason Top 50, began its 2005 season with an exhibition game with recent Torero alumni. Sophomore left-hander Nate Boman struckout 12 of the 15 batters he faced, comprised mostly of current minor-league players. Homeruns by sophomore Steve Singleton and newcomer Matt Weston highlighted a Torero offense that out-scored the alumni 17-0.
Junior standout Justin Blaine started and pitched four innings of one-hit baseball for USD. Boman came on to pitch in the fifth and immediately struckout the side en route to cruising through five innings of work. USD started six returners, including All-West Coast Conference players' second baseman Keoni Ruth, catcher Jordan Abruzzo and first baseman Randy Curtis.
The USD alumni squad fielded a team in which each of its first five batters currently play professionally (torero record-holders' second baseman Mike McCoy, center fielder Tom Caple, third baseman Greg Sain, left fielder Joe Lima and first baseman Josh Hansen).
Led by seventh-year head coach Rich Hill, who has guided USD to six winning seasons in as many years, the Toreros are playing a pair of exhibition games this weekend in preparation for its season opener January 21 versus Cal Poly SLO.
