(San Diego, CA) - Sophomore forward Ashley Gonnerman scored 16 points, as four Broncos scored in double figures during a 78-75 road victory over San Diego Thursday night at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Broncos, who led 40-39 at the half, opened up a nine point lead, 67-59 with 4:30 remaining and held on to improve 10-9 and 4-2 in the West Coast Conference.
Junior guard Tiara Harris scored a season-high 23 points for a San Diego team that drops to 7-12 and 2-4 in the WCC.
Freshman Chandice Cronk made 4-of-5 three-point attempts for Santa Clara and finished with 14 points. Consecutive three-point baskets from Cronk and junior teammate Michelle Cozad capped off a 7-0 Santa Clara run in the later stages of the second half to break open a game that was close throughout.
The Broncos were 10-of-18 from 3-point range Thursday and were able to overcome a 35-27 USD rebounding advantage to defeat the Toreros for the sixth time in seven meetings.
San Diego freshman standout Amber Sprague was limited to just three minutes of playing time in the first half after picking up two quick fouls. San Diego shot 50% from the field in the first half (16-for-32) and received 14 first half points from Harris to trail by just one at the break.
With Santa Clara in-bounding from half court, leading 72-69 with :43 seconds remaining in the game and :18 seconds remaining on the shot clock, USD elected to commit consecutive fouls in the open court on Kayla Huss, who promptly buried both attempts to give SCU a 74-69 advantage.
Following a USD turnover, San Diego again fouled Huss, who then gave the Broncos a 76-69 edge with :32 ticks left after making two more free-throws.
