Shane Buschini drove in four runs in the opener. Both games Saturday were completed in seven innings.
In game one, Shane Buschini homered and drove in four runs and USD shortstop Steve Singleton hit two doubles and totaled three RBIs. Freshman reliever Russell Holzhauer picked up his first collegiate win. San Diego collected 10 runs on nine hits while committing one error. The Vulcans had seven runs on 14 hits without an error.
In game two, trailing 5-4 after Lilly's go-ahead homerun in the sixth-inning, the Vulcans threatened by putting the tying run in scoring position in the seventh. USD reliever Nicholas Cranmer gave-way to Matthew Falk, who retired consecutive batters to earn his second save.
Hawaii-Hilo (0-5) totaled 41 hits against USD pitching spanning the five-game series, but drove in just 14 runs compared to a San Diego offense that hit .331 collectively, generating 15 extra-base hits and 45 RBIs.
Torero sophomore catcher/DH Jordan Abruzzo was 9-for-19 (.474 BA) this week against Vulcan pitching. Ryan Lilly homered twice and hit three doubles in 20 plate appearances and Shane Buschini drove in nine runs, tops among all USD players.
Sophomore starter Nate Boman (1-0) registered eight strikeouts during seven strong innings of work Thursday. Justin Blaine (1-0) and Josh Butler (1-2) also picked up victories. The trio, which is expected to comprise USD's weekend rotation, combined to allow just two runs in 19 innings.
