(San Diego, CA) In a double overtime thriller, the Toreros lost to University of San Francisco 2-1 moving USD to 0-2 in conference play and 3-9-1 overall. USF is now 3-10-2 and 1-1-0 in conference action.
Both teams struggled to control the first half. After numerous shot attempts from both teams, they ended the period tied 0-0. In the second half, USF forward Chelsea Hunt scored the Dons two goals against the USD.
Her first came in the 65th minute as she dribbled up the left side of the field. Cutting in towards the goal, she tried to cross to a team mate but her pass was deflected off of a USD defender and into the goal.
After the kickoff, the Toreros marched up field and into USF territory. A Dons defender fell on the ball just outside the goalie box and a foul was called against USF. Lining up six yards away, Torero forward Amy Epsten tapped the ball into play to Vanessa Vella who shot and scored tying the game 1-1.
At the end of regulation, the game was still tied. The Toreros out-shot the Dons 16-5 in the second half but couldn't capture the lead. The first overtime expired with the teams still deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second overtime, USF defender Jessica Duty was fouled near center field. Her free kick sailed up and over USD defenders to forward Chelsea Hunt who headed the ball into the net near the left post and ending the game 2-1.
San Francisco goalie Katie Hodgson had 16 saves to USD goalie Brittany Cameron's four. USD out-shot USF 28-9 in the match.
The women's soccer team will host St. Mary's on Sunday at Torero Stadium at 12:00 pm.
