(Moraga, CA) The Toreros return home with a 4-2 victory Friday afternoon in their Conference match against St. Mary's College.
St. Mary's (6-5-1, 3-2-0 WCC) got a quick goal early in the match when Derek Youpel got a shot off in the 8th minute. The shot came from a corner kick from Diego Rovira.
USD (6-2-2, 2-2-0 WCC) came back when in the 22nd minute forward Michael Caso received a ball off of a corner kick in the penalty pox. From 12 yards out, Caso shot and scored.
Caso again attacked with another shot 37th minute but was blocked by Gael goalie Brian Mason. Mason was not able to get a handle on the ball and forward Eric Pohl took advantage of the opportunity by taking the shot and giving the Toreros a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the 52nd minute, USD was back in St. Mary's territory. From inside the penalty box, Gaels defensemen tried clear the ball. Tanen Wels blocked the kick 8 yards from the goal, shot and scored lifting the Toreros to a 3-1 lead.
The Gaels weren't going quietly as they battled back in the 75th minute. Forward Matthew Fitzgerald found team mate Carlos Diaz who found the net.
The Toreros sealed the win when in the 88th minute when St. Mary's goalie Brian Mason didn't efficiently clear the ball from the box. Toreros mid fielder Adam Mariani got a pass from Ryan Guy. Mariani found the net, the assist credited to Guy.
The Toreros return home Sunday to take on the Loyola Marymount Bulldogs at Torero Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
