(San Diego, CA) The Toreros (4-9-1, 1-2-0) scored two goals late in the second half on Sunday afternoon against St. Mary's (7-6-1, 1-2-0) to defeat the Gaels 2-0 at Torero Stadium.
It was a match of defense as both teams played a solid first half with USD taking two shots to St. Mary's zero. The first period of play ended 0-0.
In the 75th minute, the Toreros went on the attack when sophomore defender Vanessa Vella booted a long ball into the box from 40 yards out. From inside the penalty box, junior defender Brittany Young headed the ball to junior mid-fielder Veronica Ambort. Ambort took the shot from 10 yards out to score giving USD a 1-0 lead.
USD again found themselves in Gaels territory. Freshman forward Allison Wolters attempted to take a shot from inside the penalty box when she was tripped by a St. Mary's defender. Wolters was awarded a penalty kick. Her shot went right as the goalie guessed left sealing the Torero victory 2-0.
