An intense thriller would describe Friday nights match between St. Mary's (7-5-1, 4-2-0 WCC) and USD as the Gaels defeated the Toreros 2-1.
In the first half of action, the Gaels offense was on the move. Mid-fielder Carlos Diaz passed to teammate forward Michael Clegg. USD defenders tried to clear the ball but Clegg managed to slip by. Goalie Lance Friesz charged but was not able to block Clegg's shot as St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Then in the 65th minute the Torero offense charged up field as defender Tommy Von Bromsen took a free kick from 35 yards away on the left side. The low ball crossed to the right side of the field through St. Mary's defenders and found forward Michael Caso who punched the ball into the back of the net on the left side tying up the match 1-1.
As time ticked away, both teams struggled for the lead. In the 87th minute, St. Mary's Carlos Diaz took a throw in from out-of-bounds. The ball landed into the middle of the penalty box where mid-fielder Adam Zielske passed it to Clegg who took the shot from 10-yards out lifting St. Mary's to a 2-1 lead. The Toreros could not respond as time expired.
USD goalie Lance Friesz had 3 saves and Gaels goalie Brian Mason's posted 4. The Toreros out-shot St. Mary's 22-9 recording 13 shots in the second half. USD falls to 6-3-3 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.
The Toreros will host cross-town rival San Diego State on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 pm at Torero Stadium.
