(Portland, OR) Nationally ranked #2 University of Portland (16-0-1, 4-0-1 WCC) shut-out USD on Sunday afternoon 5-0 in West Coast Conference play. Four different Pilots scored against the Toreros who struggled to defend the 13 shots Portland posted. With the loss, USD falls to 4-11-1 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Portland's first goal came in 16th minute when forward Natalie Budge received a pass taking the shot from 12 yards out past Torero keeper Brittany Cameron. USD held tough on defense almost holding the Pilots to a 1-0 first half when in the 41st minute Portland's quick passing found mid-fielder Megan Rapinoe open in the penalty box for a 2-0 lead.
Forward Michele Scifo came off the bench for the Pilots and quickly helped off of a pass from Megan Rapinoe on the far left side. Scifo received the ball airborne and headed it in lifting the Pilots to a 3-0 lead to end the first half.
In the 53rd minute, Torero defender Christina Carriaga attempted to clear a ball from inside the penalty box but aimed her shot towards the net for an own goal and a Portland 4-0 lead.
Rapinoe in the 63rd minute again centered the ball this time to mid-fielder Lindsey Huie who took the shot from 15 yards out and scored capping the 5-0 lead.
USD Goalie Brittany Cameron recorded 5 saves against Portland and goalie Karen Cook also recorded 1 save.
USD remains in Portland and will play Portland State University on Monday, Oct. 24 at 12:30 pm. The Toreros will return home for more WCC action on Friday, Oct. 28th against #15 Pepperdine, kickoff set for 5:30 pm.
