(San Diego, CA) For the second match in a row, sophomore Dustin Guerrero was able to tally a goal for the Toreros helping them to victory as USD (8-4-3, 4-3-1 WCC) made a second half comeback to defeat Gonzaga 2-1.
The Bulldogs (4-7-4, 2-4-2 WCC) posted a goal first in the 38th minute as mid-fielder Chris Hoyd connected with forward Foday Kabba. Kabba was 15 yards away from the goal as he took a side kick that hit off the left post. The ball dribbled along the goal line to the right post and crossed the line into the net. The assist was credited to Chris Hoyd. USD had many attempts to score, but the half ended 1-0.
The Toreros were on the attack in the second half when in the 62nd minute, mid-fielder Ryan Guy took a shot on goal from inside the penalty box. Blocked by Bulldog defenders, the ball rolled left along the out of bounds line. Gonzaga defense waited for the ball to roll out of bounds when Dustin Guerrero brought the ball back into play. With no flag from the linesman, Guerrero took a few dribbles and shot from inside the goalie box to the lower right past Bulldog goalie Sean Sosnovec tying the game 1-1. Credit the assist to Ryan Guy.
USD was back in Bulldog territory in the 82nd minute when forward Scott Martin took a direct shot in front of the goal from 20 yards out. Sosnovec blocked it with his hands and the ball bounced to the right. Mid-fielder Tannen Wels got the rebound inside the goalie box to the right of the net and shot the ball back into the center of the net for the game-winning goal before the goalie could recover.
USD had 6 shots-on-goal to Gonzaga's 3. Gonzaga goalie tallied 4 saves while Torero goalie Lance Friesz recorded 2.
San Diego and Gonzaga will return to Torero Stadium on Monday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 pm for their make-up game that was cancelled at the beginning of the month due to poor field conditions.
