(San Diego, CA) Avenging their 2004 season opener loss to USD, Santa Clara (11-2-1, 1-0-0 WCC) shut out the Toreros 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
San Diego (3-8-1, 0-1-0 WCC) was held to a single shot in a back-and-forth first period of play, while SCU took five shots against USD. Torero goalie Brittany Cameron recorded two saves in the half to Bronco goalie Julie Ryder's one. The half expired tied at 0-0.
Both teams fought in the second half to find the net. It was Santa Clara that struck fast and quick with a pair of goals inside a minute of each other.
Santa Clara mid-fielder Tiffany Roberts got the pass from defender Micaela Esquivel inside the goal box. With the ball airborne, Roberts took the opportunity heading it into the net from the right side of the goal. Esquivel was credited with the assist.
46 seconds later, the Broncos were back in the Torero goal box. Roberts again took the shot but it was deflected by USD defenders. SCU forward Jordan Angeli got the rebound while still in the goalie box and got off a shot to seal the game 2-0. The assist going to Roberts.
USD women's soccer is at home on Friday Oct. 14th against University of San Francisco at 7:00 pm and again on Sunday to take on St. Mary's at noon.
