USD Deadlocked 1-1 Against 5th Ranked Broncos

(Santa Clara, CA) The men's soccer team walked away with a 1-1 tie against 5th ranked Santa Clara on Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The outcome of the match keeps their post-season chances alive with three games remaining in the regular season. The Toreros move to 8-4-4 overall and a conference mark of 4-3-2.

USD struck first in the 17th against a tough Broncos defense as forward Ryan Guy found mid-fielder Calle Rendahl open inside the penalty box on the right side of the field. Rendahl received Guy's pass 20 yards out from the goal and shot it to the near post past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros held onto the lead until the 67th minute when Bronco mid-fielder Kieth Devey connected with mid-fielder Mehdi Ballouchy. Ballouchy saw defender Ted Kristensson open sending over a quick pass. Kristensson shot and scored tying the match 1-1.

San Diego's defense held tough as Santa Clara took shot after shot in the overtime periods. The Broncos took four corner kicks in less than four minutes during the second overtime. However, the Torero defense stopped each attempt holding on for the 1-1 tie to end the match.

Lance Friesz tallied 7 saves against the Bronco offense. SCU moves to 12-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the WCC.

The Toreros travel north for their Sunday match against University of San Francisco scheduled for 2:00 pm.
