(San Diego, CA) - The USD Toreros improved to 5-2 on the season with their fourth straight victory downing the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders 94-67. Freshman center Gyno Pomare scored a personal-best 21 points and Nick Lewis followed with 20 as the Toreros ran away in the 2nd half. Corey Belser was one point shy of his 4th double-double finishing with 9 points and 10 rebounds, and Theo White came off the bench for a solid 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Toreros return to the JCP this Thursday to take on Point Loma Nazarene in a 7:05 p.m. contest.
Behind the inside scoring of Pomare in the first half USD jumped out to a 12 point lead at 23-11 with 10:36 to go. The UC Riverside Highlanders battled back with a 13-3 run to cut it to two at 26-24 with 6:11 to go. With just under 3 minutes left they pulled to within 33-32, but USD edged ahead and a Ross DeRogatis trey at the buzzer made it 42-36 at intermission.
It was all USD in the 2nd half as they stepped up their intensity and made some adjustments outscoring UCR 52-31 over the final 20 minutes. Nick Lewis had 14 of his 20 points in the 2nd half and USD's inside game eventually wore down the smaller Highlanders. Besides his 20 points, Lewis chipped in with 7 rebounds, a career-best 7 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. All ten Toreros that played scored and USD's 94 points was a new season-high and the third time they have reached 90 or more points.
USD's current 4-game winning streak started with a 82-65 road win over this very same team in Riverside back on Nov. 25th. USD outrebounded UCR 50-41, outshot them 50% to 37.1%, and dished out 20 assists to their 13. USD did struggle from beyond the three-point arc where they managed to make just 4-of-16. UC Riverside was paced by Houston Power with 13 points off the bench.
