(Houston, Texas) - Inclement weather disrupted the first day of spring competition for the USD Torero men's golf team at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston. Completing one of two scheduled rounds Monday at the 6,954-yard par 72 Wildcat Golf Course, San Diego's Jimmy Harris overcame an hour rain delay and high winds to post a two-over par 74, placing among tournament leaders. Wet conditions forced the cancellation of Monday's second round. The tournament will conclude with the 15 competing schools playing one final round Tuesday starting at 8:00 AM (CT).
"As a coach watching in terrible weather like that, that's all you can really ask of them," said second-year Toreros head coach Tim Mickelson Monday about his team's 2005 debut. "Even though we aren't at the top of the leaderboard, I'm pleased with their effort."
Mickelson's San Diego team posted a team scoring average of 292 this fall, a 15-stroke improvement from a year ago. Individually, USD brings 16 sub-par rounds into its '05 spring campaign, a marked improvement from posting 10 all of last year.
