San Diego is competing at UC Riverside's Highlander 'Braveheart' Classic men¹s golf tournament held at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, March 7-8. UCR junior Brendan Steele leads the individual tournament by three strokes. Cal Poly took a two-stroke lead over hosts UC Riverside in the team standings after two rounds of play. No Torero finished among the leaders.
UCR held a five-shot lead over the Cal Poly after the first round, carding an 11-under 277. The Highlanders shot 293 in the second round to allow the Mustangs to overtake them in the top spot thanks to a 286. With one round left to play, Cal Poly is at 568, with UCR on 570. Idaho (572), UC Santa Barbara (579), and Boise State (580) round out the top five.
Four players shot a ­4 68 in the first round, including UCR¹s Steele and Eric Riehle. Steele followed that up with a six-under 66 to hold a three-stroke lead over Chris Heintz of UCLA. Mike McCabe (Portland), Greg Wells (UCSB), and Joe Lanza (St. Mary¹s) are four shots back on 138, -6.
Play will conclude Tuesday, March 8 with the third and final round.
