San Diego, Calif. - The University of San Diego attempted to break Pepperdine University's stranglehold of West Coast Conference Championships, but came up short this afternoon, losing 4-0 in the finals of the 2005 West Coast Conference Championships. Although the Toreros did not have sophomore Brittany Reitz and senior Tara Livesay due to injuries and Jenny Brown was not at her best because of a foot injury, San Diego demonstrated its competitive spirit in many of the matches.
"I thought we competed really, really well," said head coach Sherri Stephens. "In singles, there were some exciting matches. I think it could have gone either way. I'm bummed we lost, but I think we finished really strong considering we only had half our team."
Added Emma Murphy: "Everyone went into the match because we wanted to do it for Kaz and Tara, so we took a fighting spirit and it lasted the whole match, but unfortunately, Pepperdine was just a step above us in everything."
Pepperdine got out to a great start, bolting to a 3-0 lead in both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and San Diego was not able to overcome the large deficit. On Court 1, Caroline Raba and Sylvia Kosakowski defeated Emma Murphy and Lauren Perl 8-3, while at the No. 2 position, Eva Dickes and Bianca Dulgheru beat Jenny Brown and Lauren Kazarian 8-1.
The Waves quickly picked up a victory at the No. 4 spot, as Merve Asimgil overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first set to beat Helene Lindstrand 6-4, 6-0. Dulgheru followed with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kazarian on Court 2. Sylvia Kosakowski, who overcame a first set loss to beat Perl 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, clinched the contest and accounted for the final margin.
San Diego finishes the season with a 9-11 record, while Pepperdine improves to 14-8.
At the conclusion of the West Coast Conference Championships, the yearly awards were handed out and the Toreros did not leave empty-handed. Murphy was once again named the WCC Player of the Year after capturing the honor last year. In addition, Kazarian capped off her collegiate career by joining Murphy on the All-WCC Singles Team. The tandem of Murphy and Perl earned a spot on the All-WCC Doubles Team. Brown and Kazarian also earned a spot on the Honorable Mention All-WCC Doubles Team.
