Moira McCarthy had 11 kills in 14 attacks as 18th-ranked San Diego began its 2005 season with a 3-0 victory over UC Irvine Friday night at UCI's Crawford Court. San Diego (1-0) swept UC Irvine (0-1) by scores of 30-28, 30-23 and 30-12.
Kristen Carlson and
Jackie Bernardin combined for 23 digs in three games as USD held the Anteater offense to 31 kills in over 100 attempts and a .099 hitting percentage.
Led by 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year Jennifer Petrie, San Diego needed just 1 hour and 36 minutes to beat UC Irvine on its home floor. All-America setter Lindsey Sherburne passed out 37 assists for USD. Sherburne is one of four returning starters for a Torero team that finished the 2004 season as the undefeated (14-0) WCC Champions.
In her first collegiate start, USD middle hitter Laurel Abrahamson had five blocks. Sophomore classmates Abrahamson, McCarthy and Erin Wiskar, played in all three games during Friday night's sweep.
UC Irvine received a team-high seven kills and five blocks from Amanda Vazquez.
San Diego continues its season-opening road trip in Southern California with a neutral court match against eight-time defending Big Sky Champion Sacramento State at 1:00 p.m. PST Saturday at the Pyramid in Long Beach.
